from Oannes *

Όπως κι ο Shostakovich, ο Γάλλος συνθέτης Olivier Messiaen, με την έναρξη του Β’ΠΠ έσπευσε να καταταγεί στο στρατό. Η θέση του ήταν του ιατρικού βοηθού, λόγω προβλημάτων όρασης.
Ο Messiaen πιάστηκε αιχμάλωτος από τους Γερμανούς και κλείστηκε σε στρατόπεδο συγκέντρωσης. Εκεί συναντώντας άλλους κρατούμενους μουσικούς [ένα βιολιστή, ένα τσελίστα και ένα κλαρινετίστα] έγραψε ένα τρίο, το οποίο ενσωμάτωσε στο κουαρτέτο “Για το Τέλος του Χρόνου” που είχε ξεκινήσει να συνθέτει. Το θέμα του αφορά στο τέλος του κόσμου ιδωμένο μέσα από την Αποκάλυψη.
Το ολοκληρωμένο έργο παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά εκεί, σε ακροατήριο κρατουμένων και φυλάκων και με τον Messiaen σε ένα άθλιο πιάνο…

Like Shostakovich, the French composer Olivier Messiaen, at the beginning of the WW II was quick to join the army. His position was that of medical assistant’s because of vision problems.
Messiaen was taken prisoner by the Germans and locked up in a concentration camp. There, meeting other detained musicians [a violinist, a cellist and a clarinetist] he wrote a trio, which he incorporated into the Quartet For the End of Time he ‘d begun composing. His subject is the end of the world seen through the Apocalypse.
The completed work was presented for the first time there, to an audience of prisoners and guards and with Messiaen on a lousy piano…
