Σύμφωνα με τον Glenn Gould, o Camille Saint-Saëns [1835-1921] υπήρξε “υπόδειγμα συνθέτη”. Η σχέση του με τις επαναστατικές αλλαγές που συντελούνταν στη μουσική της εποχής του, παρέμεινε αμφιλεγόμενη. Αφέθηκε να επηρεαστεί ως ένα βαθμό, κρατώντας όμως μια καλή σχέση με τις παραδοσιακές φόρμες, πράγμα που του εξασφάλισε τον χαρακτηρισμό του “συντηρητικού”. Γεγονός είναι ότι από ένα σημείο και μετά ήρθε σε αντιπαράθεση με ρεύματα όπως ο ιμπρεσιονισμός [υπήρξε “προσωπικός εχθρός” του Debussy] και η ατονικότητα. Ο Saint-Saëns, ιδιαίτερα παραγωγικός, έγραψε μουσική σε όλες τις φόρμες, εγκαινιάζοντας και μια νέα: εκείνην του soundtrack. Η μουσική του για την ταινία “Η Δολοφονία Του Δούκα Της Γκίζας”, υπήρξε η πρώτη ανάθεση original film score στην ιστορία. Ακούμε ένα απόσπασμα.

According to Glenn Gould, Camille Saint-Saëns [1835-1921] was an “exemplary composer”. His relationship with the revolutionary changes in music taking place at his time remained ambivalent. Influenced to some degree, he chose to keep in touch with traditional forms, a position that gave him the “conservative” label.
As a matter of fact, from one point on he came into conflict with musical trends such as Impressionism [he was Debussy‘s “personal enemy”] and atonality. Saint-Saëns, a prolific composer, wrote music in each and every form, also inaugurating a new one: that of the soundtrack. His music for the film “The Assassination of the Duke of Guise” was the first original film score in history. We hear an extract from this.
