Russian composer and pianist, Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich [1906-1975] is yet another significant artist born this month. His music, characterized by emotional depth and harmonic complexity, has been repeatedly in the eye of Soviet censorship. In the first and third one of the works we hear, he uses the DSCH motif, a musical ciphergram D-S-C-H taken from his name. Shostakovitch dedicated the first Cello Concerto to his friend Mstislav Rostropovich – M.K.
