Pitbull Awareness 2023

Hibiscus & me!

This is Hera and as Pitbull Awareness Month ends one more year

I would like to remind my friends and especially those who are fearful of my kind a few simple things:

✽ We were bred as babysitters

✽ We are super loyal to our family, so don’t abuse our loyalty

✽ If we ever misbehave, blame the owner! [I particularly like that one! …you know, leaving food unattended, slippers in the wrong place etc!]

Be very afraid!

Beware though

✽ Our love’s as strong as a bull

✽ Our tail is dangerously vivid

✽ Our look will melt your heart

[I mean look at that:]

…very afraid! 😉

National Pit Bull Awareness Day is held to undo the reputational damage done to pitbulls in the previous 20 years.

Sending all my friends paw waves and slobbery kisses [to those who can take it! 😉

Copying from The National Pitbull Awareness Day for some history on how and why this day was created:

In 2007, National Pit Bull Awareness Day was created to help raise awareness on the truth about Pit Bulls. For nearly 100 years, these four-legged friends were considered “Nanny Dogs,” because they were so loyal, docile, and loving that parents would often leave their babies or toddlers with their pit bulls while they ran to the store.  Over the decades, pitties have unfortunately garnered a reputation as being ferocious, malicious, and dangerous beasts. An image far from the truth and based on the actions of maligned humans, not the animals themselves.  Pit bulls were born out of a mixture of a bulldog and a terrier in England in the 18th century, partly to help with much-needed rodent and vermin regulation from the Industrial Revolution, but also because dog fighting was, unfortunately, popular at the time. That being said, as the now-extinct Bull and Terrier breed evolved into the American Staffordshire Pit Bull we now know and love, these pups were always considered affectionate, loyal, and great family dogs by breeders and owners alike.

  1. I’m here via Resa’s blog. When I saw the title, I couldn’t resist. We fostered two pits when we lived in Ohio, both rescue dogs. One had been left chained outside an empty home in Cleveland, the other they think was used as a bait dog for fights. They were the most loving dogs, just wanted to get in your lap and love you. Of course they had issues from their backgrounds but nothing dangerous or mean. They changed many minds and we were so happy for them to get their forever homes.

  2. Yay! Hera!

    Pitties are beautiful.
I think parents are quite often to blame for rotten kids, not just dogs.

  3. Loved your pictures Hera, I can see you have your Mum well trained to capture those cute poses you make… And I bet you just love it when your Mum leaves those slippers out 😉 and those times she forgot and left some food out… Butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth I am sure..

You make a great mascot for Pitbull Awareness Hera…. Sending you the biggest
((HUGS )) and much love ❤ xx ❤

  4. Thank you for this wonderful and thoughtful post with beautiful pictures! Hera is the perfect ambassador for this special day!

  5. Hera is such a beautiful pittie. I remember when I was ignorant and was afraid of them – believing the horror stories. I am no longer ignorant and know they are a wonderful breed, especially when they land in the proper families! xoxo to Hera and her mom and dad!

  6. Hera is beautiful, she does not look like the munster people sometimes describe, true most of the time the owner is probably to blame, or praise when they care for them well I guess.
