from Oannes blog…

March 5, 1887

Heitor Villa-Lobos was born

Από τον Narciso Yepes και την London Symphony Orchestra υπό τον Garcia Navarro.

On this date, March 5, 1887 the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos was born, one of the greatest of the twentieth century. His guitar compositions are more well known, but he was an extraordinarily prolific composer, with a work which includes operas, symphonies and other orchestral works, chamber music and music for solo piano… We hear his Concerto for guitar and small orchestra. Narciso Yepes: guitar. The London Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Garcia Navarro.

More about these reblogs

Lately I have been rebloging music videos from Oannes new blog. For my friends who didn’t know, or wonder why…. Oannes [aka Socratis Papahatzis] is my husband, partner in life and music and the one with my undying admiration. Together we have a band MK-O [the music of Marina Kanavaki & Oannes]. So, it’s my pleasure to share with you his [and mine] musical selections. Although here I reblog mainly his musical selections, he writes exceptional articles on various topics [some may need translation], so do visit his site. He has my highest recommendation!

  1. I discovered Villa-Lobos as a teenager from a piece that folksinger Joan Baez included on an early album of hers. I started buying recordings of works by Villa-Lobos and ended up accumulating a couple of dozen records, which I still have six decades later. The classical music radio station in Austin plays a Villa-Lobos piece once in a while but not as often as I wish they did.
