Σαν σήμερα, 28 Μαρτίου 1890, γεννήθηκε ο Paul Whiteman, ο “Βασιλιάς της jazz”, o πιο επιτυχημένος και διάσημος bandleader της προ-swing εποχής. Ο PW έγινε εξ αρχής στόχος “μουσικών σχολιαστών” για τον τρόπο προσέγγισής του στη jazz, πολύ “λευκό”, με άλλα λόγια “χλιαρό” και δίχως χώρο για αυστοσχεδιαστική αυθορμησία. Βλέπουμε ήδη εδώ, όπως και σε άλλες περιπτώσεις, πχ. η Original Dixieland Jass Band [το πρώτο jazz συγκρότημα που ηχογράφησε ποτέ άλμπουμ] να είναι παρούσα μια μορφή ρατσιστικής αντιμετώπισης των λευκών μουσικών του χώρου. Αυτό θα οδηγούσε σε ένα είδος τυφλής “λατρείας της αυθεντικότητας” που, στην πράξη σημαίνει ότι κριτήριο της αξίας ενός λευκού μουσικού της jazz ή των blues, είναι το κατά πόσο καταφέρνει να ηχεί σαν μαύρος.
Ακόμα κι αν η ορχήστρα του Whiteman υστερεί κάπως σε drive από κάποιες σύγχρονες, είχε μεγάλες αρετές: σπάνια επαγγελματική αρτιότητα, ενός πολυμελούς συνόλου με συμμετοχή λευκών και μαύρων μουσικών [σε εποχές ακραία ρατσιστικές], πολυμορφία ενός ρεπερτορίου που κυμαινόταν από ποπ τραγούδια εποχής έως και “σοβαρές” συνθέσεις. Ήταν με αυτή την ορχήστρα που έκανε το ντεμπούτο της η Γαλάζια Ραψωδία του Γκέρσουιν, και ο Paul Whiteman να μπορεί να θωρηθεί πρωτοπόρος του Third Stream [είδους μουσικής που συνδυάζει jazz και κλασικές φόρμες. Αντιπροσωπευτικό παράδειγμά του, η δουλειά του Miles Davis με τον Gil Evans].
Ο Duke Ellington στην αυτοβιογραφία του θα γράψει για τον PW:”Paul Whiteman was known as the King of Jazz, and no one as yet has come near carrying that title with more certainty and dignity.” Ακούμε την πρώτη ηχογράφηση του “Rhapsody In Blue” [1924] από την ορχήστρα του PW με τον George Gershwin το πιάνο. Στη συνέχεια, “Mississippi Mud” [1927]. Ξεχωρίζει η τρομπέτα του Bix Beiderbecke  και το φωνητικό συγκρότημα των Rhythm Boys – ανάμεσά τους, ξεκινώντας την καριέρα του, o Bing Crosby…

On this date, March 28th, 1890, Paul Whiteman was born. Τhe “King of Jazz”, the most successful and famous bandleader of the pre-swing era. PW became the target of “musical commentators” for its approach to jazz, very “white”, in other words “lukewarm” and without room for improvisation. With him and other cases, for example The Original Dixieland Jass Band [the first jazz band ever recorded an album] we see already present a form of racist treatment of the white musicians in the field. This will lead to a kind of blind “cult of authenticity” that, in practice, means that a white musician’s merit is based exclusively on whether he manages to sound like a black man.
However, even though Whiteman‘s orchestra lags somewhat behind some others in terms of “drive”, it definitely has virtues: the professional integrity of a large-scale ensemble involving white and black musicians [in wildly racist times], and a versatile repertoire ranging from pop songs of the period up to “serious” compositions. It was with this orchestra that Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue debuted, and Paul Whiteman can be credited as the pioneer of Third Stream [a music genre that combines jazz and classic forms. The work of Miles Davis with Gil Evans is a fine example]. Duke Ellington writes about PW in his autobiography: “Paul Whiteman was known as the King of Jazz, and no one as yet has come near carrying that title with more certainty and dignity.” We hear the first recording of “Rhapsody In Blue” [1924] by PW’s orchestra with George Gershwin on piano. Then “Mississippi Mud” [1927]. Bix Beiderbecke’s trumpet stands out, along with the vocal trio of the Rhythm Boys’  – among them, starting his career, Bing Crosby…
