Freedom of choice… or something

Well:
…or something!

Just a note to think about.

Freedom Of Choice

by

Devo

From their album “Freedom Of Choice” [1980]

[Verse 1]
A victim of collision on the open sea
Nobody ever said, life was free
Sink, swim, go down with the ship
But use your freedom of choice

[Pre-Hook]
I’ll say it again, in the land of the free
Use your freedom of choice
Freedom of choice

[Hook]
In ancient Rome
There was a poem
About a dog
Who found two bones
He peeked at one
He licked the other
He went in circles
Then he dropped dead

[Post-Hook]
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom of choice

[Verse 2]
Then if you got it, you don’t want it
Seems to be the rule of thumb
Don’t be tricked by what you see
You got two ways to go

[Pre-Hook]
I’ll say it again, in the land of the free
Use your freedom of choice
Freedom of choice

[Post-Hook]
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom of choice

[Hook]
In ancient Rome
There was a poem
About a dog
Who found two bones
He peeked at one
He licked the other
He went in circles
Then he dropped dead

[Outro, repeatedly]
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom from choice
Is what you want

  1. Yes… freedom of choice. I think we have that now, during C-19, even if we are being told what to do.
We are free to comply or not.
I fear our freedoms have been somewhat curtailed by a virus.
    Love your artwork, Marina!!

Didn’t know this Devo song… very cool!
(Hope you like the Hera post!)

    • Yes, we do have freedom, within bounds (mostly our own! 😉)

  2. We have the freedom whether or not to develop and express spirit. It’s what makes us human! Keep on growing and expressing…and sharing. Even fear can’t keep us from expressing fear. Powerful images.

  3. A timely post… Your title is what we all should be considering in these times when voices are being silenced.. Love the song and lyrics … And if we do not choose well… Then no good moaning later when their are no choices are left..
Love and Blessings dear Marina… Loved your painting of hand over mouth.. ❤ much love my friend ❤

      • There is always a choice, dear girl, save some more difficult to make, especially with abstract expressions or impressions which I love for the freedom this allows. There’s no doubt that you’ve accomplish with all three and on this occasion the choice is easy, for each give a distinct imagery to interpret… the close up of the first, the daytime of the second and the night time atmosphere of the last. Mind you the 1st was slightly less clear, without the eyes overlooking the bow of that ship. All clear to me though having been a sailor on the open seas in my younger years, then imagining someone up there was watching over us. Thus so be one’s choices accomplished!

        • Ah, my dear Jean-Jacques, I love your perspective. That first enigmatic image is a detail from the negative image. Something I always like doing, as I discover images within images! 😉
As for choices, choices we do make but how ‘free’ they are… this is another question. You see everything is subject to time, place, environment, mental state, our past… to name a few variants for the choices we make. How much ‘freedom’ lies within it, depends! 😉 Thank you so much for such an insightful comment. Have a wonderful day and weekend ahead! 🙂

  4. Great song. Love ❤️ this image – made me think of blood on the blackboard- which in turn, made me think of the Ramones Rock And Roll High School – 🤪😋😆😂

    • Devo, right?! The red is actually blood, as a symbol of freedom [hence the song] albeit in a broader sense for the freedom we never had, nor will we ever. It’s nature [among other things! 😉 ] A ha ha… yep – love ’em Ramones!!!! 😉
ps losing too many good people, Dave Greenfield, Florian Schneider… [I just saw your post on Florian]

  5. I love Devo and Freedom of Choice is one of their best songs. It’s a Wonderful Word is a good song for these times, also. The artwork is really fantastic, Marina.
