“America is pregnant with promises and anticipation, but is murdered by the hand of the inevitable”.
Keith Emerson with his first band, The Nice, in the time of protest songs and social movements [late ’60s] deconstructing Leonard Bernstein‘s classic. Removing Sondheim‘s lyrics, The Nice added the phrase heard at the end of the instrumental: “America is pregnant with promises and anticipation, but is murdered by the hand of the inevitable”.
During a live performance of the song at London’s Royal Albert Hall, in front of the American ambassador, The Nice set an American flag on fire, creating pandemonium in the audience.
The band was ushered off stage. Its members were informed shortly after that they were banned from Royal Albert Hall for life.
Leonard Bernstein … wasn’t thrilled. Asked what he thought about the Nice cover, his answer was: “I literally loathe what they’ve done. They’ve corrupted my work”…
