Επιστροφή στο February born musicians club, με ένα από τους μεγαλύτερους πιανίστες και δάσκαλους του πιάνου του 19ου και 20 αι., τον Λιθουανό – μετέπειτα Αμερικανό πολίτη Leopold Godowsky [1870-1938].
Έχοντας καταγάγει τους τυπικούς θριάμβους ενός παιδιού – θαύματος [σολίστ και συνθέτης σε ηλικία πέντε ετών, πρώτη εμφάνιση ως πιανίστας κονσέρτου στα 9 κοκ.] ο LG θα διακριθεί κυρίως ως καινοτόμος παιδαγωγός του πιάνου, παρόλο που, ή ίσως ακριβώς γιατί, ελάχιστα ήταν τα μαθήματα που έλαβε ο ίδιος.
Η συνθετική παραγωγή του LG δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα προβεβλημένη. Γνωστότερα έργα του είναι εκείνα που αφορούν σχολιασμούς – επεκτάσεις συνθέσεων άλλων, με πρώτες και κύριες τις Σπουδές του πάνω στις Σπουδές του Σοπέν.
Ακούμε το πρώτο μέρος από την Σονάτα του για πιάνο σε Μι ελάσσονα : Allegro non troppo ma appassionato. Μια ιδέα των δεξιοτεχνικών απαιτήσεων του έργου παίρνει κανείς από τη δήλωση του Horowitz [!] ότι για την εκτέλεσή του χρειάζονται …έξη χέρια.
Ο Marc-Andre Hamelin τα καταφέρνει έξοχα με δυο.

Back to February born musicians club, with one of the greatest pianists and piano teachers of the 19th and 20th centuries, the American, Lithuanian – born Leopold Godowsky [1870-1938].
Having mastered the typical triumphs of a child prodigy [soloist and composer at the age of five, first appearance as a concert pianist at 9 etc.] LG would be distinguished mainly as an innovative piano educator, although, or perhaps precisely because, very few lessons were received by him.
The compositional output of LG is not particularly prominent. His best-known works are annotations – extensions of other composers works, with first and foremost his Studies on Chopin’s Studies.
We hear the first part of his Piano sonata in E minor : Allegro non troppo ma appassionato. One gets an idea of the work’s technical difficulties from Horowitz’s [!] statement that …six hands are required for its performance.
Marc-Andre Hamelin manages it brilliantly with two.
