from Oannes *

Ένας από τους λόγους για τους οποίους η μουσική του Kurt Magnus Atterberg είναι ουσιαστικά άγνωστη, αφορά στο ρομαντικό προσανατολισμό της, σε μια εποχή κατακλυσμικών αλλαγών στο χώρο της τέχνης (και όχι μόνο), με βασικό αίτημα τη “ριζοσπαστική καινοτομία”.
Άλλος λόγος είναι η δυσφήμιση που, δικαιολογημένα ή αδικαιολόγητα (παραμένει αδιευκρίνιστο) υπέστη ως Nazi sympathizer.
Σε κάθε περίπτωση, ο Σουηδός συνθέτης, βιοποριζόμενος ως μηχανικός σε όλη τη διάρκεια της ζωής του, παρήγαγε εντυπωσιακό αριθμό έργων, συμφωνίες, όπερες, κονσέρτα, μουσική δωματίου κ.ά, η ανακάλυψη των οποίων αξίζει τον κόπο.
Διαλέγουμε από αυτά ένα χαμηλών τόνων, μελωδικό και ατμοσφαιρικό έργο : η Σουίτα Νο 3 για βιολί, βιόλα και ορχήστρα εγχόρδων είναι βασισμένη στη σκηνική μουσική του για το θεατρικό του Maeterlinck ‘Soeur Beatrice’. Ακούμε το δεύτερο μέρος, Pantomim. Moderato.

One of the reasons Kurt Magnus Atterberg’s music is basically unknown, has to do with its romantic orientation, at a time of cataclysmic changes in the arts’ field (and not only), with “radical innovations” being the main issue.
Another reason is the defamation he justifiably or unjustifiably (it remains unclear) suffered as a Nazi sympathizer.
In any case, the Swedish composer, making a living as an engineer throughout his life, produced an impressive number of works, symphonies, operas, concerts, chamber music etc., the discovery of which is worthwhile.
We choose a low-key, melodic and atmospheric one : Suite No. 3 for violin, viola and string orchestra is based on his stage music for Maeterlinck’s theatrical ‘Soeur Beatrice’. We hear its second part, Pantomim. Moderato.
