Σαν σήμερα, 10 Απριλίου 1911, στη Νέα Υόρκη, γεννήθηκε ο Martin Denny, “πατέρας” της Exotica, του είδους ελαφράς μουσικής που ονομάστηκε απ’ τον τίτλο του πρώτου του άλμπουμ – 1957. Η μουσική του Martin Denny ατμοσφαιρική, εκλεπτυσμένη, ευγενικά υποχωρητική, βασισμένη σε “χαβανέζικες” μελωδίες, επιτυχίες εποχής και jazz standards, λάτιν ρυθμούς και κρουστά όργανα αλλά και …ήχους της φύσης οδηγεί τη φαντασία σε τροπικά, παραδείσια μέρη που, το ότι δεν υπάρχουν στην πραγματικότητα [οι επικρίσεις των κυνηγών της …αυθεντικότητας, μιλούσαν πάντα για ψευδο-φολκ, τουριστικές βερσιόν της μουσικής του Ειρηνικού κτλ.] είναι ακριβώς το μεγάλο ατού τους…. Η exotica θα αναβίωνε ως ιδανική μουσική φυγής στα αποενοχοποιημένα ’90s, δίνοντας έμπνευση [και προμηθεύοντας πλήθος samples] σε μέρος της σκηνής της electronica. Για τα δικά μου αυτιά κομμάτια σαν τα παρακάτω είναι ένα, στιγμιαίο έστω, αντίδοτο στο ζόφο των ημερών.

On this date, April 10, 1911, Martin Denny was born in New York, “father” of Exotica, the light music genre named after his first album – 1957. Martin Denny’s atmospheric, refined, kindly compliant music, based on “Hawaiian” melodies, period hits and jazz standards, latin rhythms and percussion instruments, along with sounds of birds and wild animals, leads the imagination to tropical, paradise places that, the fact that they do not actually exist [critics spoke about pseudo-folk, tourist version of Pacific music, etc.] is exactly their great advantage. Exotica would be revived as an ideal getaway music in the decried ’90s, inspiring [and supplying a multitude of samples] to the scene of electronica. For my ears pieces like the following are an instant antidote for these gloomy days…
