First Snow

17 days in January

Winter at last!

Gandalf greets the first snow

early in the morning

with currently -2ºC

Loreena McKennitt

from her EP A Winter Garden: Five Songs For The Season

White are the far-off plains
And white the fading forests grow
The wind dies out amongst the tides
And denser still the snow
A gathering weight on roof and tree
Falls down scarce audibly
The meadows and far-sheeted streams
Lie still without a sound
Like some soft minister of dreams
The snowfall hoods me around
In wood and water, earth and air
A silence is everywhere
Save when at lonely spells
Some farmer’s sleigh is urged on
With rustling runner and sharp bells
Swings by me and is gone
Or from the empty waste I hear
A sound remote and clear
The barking of a dog
To cattle, is sharply pued
Borne, echoing from some wayside stall
Or barnyard far afield
Then all is silent and the snow
Falls settling soft and slow
The evening deepens and the grey
Folds closer Earth to sky
The world seems shrouded, so far away
Its noises sleep, and I
As secret as yon buried stream
Plod dumbly on and dream
And dream
And dream
I dream
And I dream

  1. Snow looks so fab when it’s just fallen and clean white.
Gandalf is a hoot! He’s a bit of a beacon on your blog. The song is beautiful. Thank you, Marina!

    • I just love the first snow.
Gandalf greets me every morning so he deserves to be a beacon!! 😉😂
So glad you enjoyed the song too.
Gandalf sends his greetings 🧙‍♂️🌟💫 and Hera lots of tail wags and slobbery kisses and send you many many hugs and love!
      Happy weekend!

              • Ah, so I don’t need sponges! 🤣 Good work Marina. (did you see Holly’s post…. OMG…. what would S think?)❦

                • I just did and I can’t wait to read the interview! Your hands turn everything they touch to gold!!!! I love everything you do!!!!!!! Prepare for another wave of love and hugs!!!! ❤🤗❤🤗❤🤗❤🤗❤
                  I know he’ll love it!!!!!!!! 😘😘😘😘

                  • Whew! It’s quite bubbly gummy, and he’s quite serious. Well, I only dressed them. I didn’t write the songs.
I’ve just finished roughing in my answers to the questions. I’ll allow myself to sleep on them, and send them in tomorrow.
I’m planning a thank you post for Holly. I’m thinking a review of all my fave drawings that she inspired, and a song by Leonard Cohen, Suzanne. It’s one of her fave song/poems by him. What do you think?
Maybe you could donate something? A photo or painting that makes you think of her… her poetry … she lives by the ocean. I see that the ocean and beaches and wildlife therein have influenced her greatly. Just a thought… no pressure or worries.

  2. I just read that a few days ago you had more than 25° C in some parts of greece (while spain had heavy snowfall). Now at least you have winter.

    • Thank you, Frank! Not a huge fan of Winter / snow either [even though I love the quiet after a snowfall], however I do enjoy the changes of seasons, so this was very welcome.
You too, my friend have a great week ahead!

  3. The photo of Gandolf greeting the first show is so perfect. Your first snow is beautiful and you have shown it off so well. Beautiful music to accompany the first snow.

      • Yeah well you have lots that we don’t so… 😉
And it was really pretty over there! 26C! We won’t be seeing that till at the very least end of May – and IF it’s freakishly hot!
I really did enjoy it. Was so pretty. xoxoxo
